When I work with a client, one of the approaches we might use is visualization. It helps get to the heart of what a person wants, and it can give both a sense of interest and a sense of direction for choosing a path forward.
With performer and author Laurie Klein, this visualization not only helped us discover ideas for an action plan, it also lent power to a photography project I ended up doing for her because I wanted to “gift” her something beautiful for her journey as both a person and a new author.
Laurie’s visualization was that she was making “little coats” for her new book. The idea came from a story that means a lot to her, about a woman who made little coats for her boy every year, after they were separated. It’s a tender image of care and intimacy and hope in the face of change—perfect for her book, which deals with losses and change with a life-long love relationship.
What change are you facing, or wanting? How can you visualize a path forward, starting with a simple, powerful image? You might even choose to do an artistic project to further explore your image. The way I did as a gift for Laurie.
Go ahead. Gift yourself today. With an image. And an exploration.
